Building basic fundamentals is imperative to coaching and teaching the game. Too many kids aren’t taught the basic fundamentals which slows down their progress as they get older. Nothing is more basic than shooting a proper layup. It is not merely about making the layup, you want to implement the proper footwork as well. The ring layup series ensures that beginning basketball players will learn the right footwork to make a layup. The focus is on the last two steps just before the layup is shot. Two rings or markers are placed in the lane near the rim, depicting the last two steps of the layup. It is a progression drill so players must first get the footwork down with no ball or dribble, then progress to dribbling the basketball without shooting, and finally, when they are ready, shoot a layup off the dribble.
