“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”
? Augustine of Hippo
As many of us go through the monotonous, regimented, everyday motions which are our lives, we sometimes need a spark or something that will get us out of that funk we so often feel. I know not all people have a vast amount of free time in their often busy lives, but if I could hand out one piece of advice to those people who feel this way, it would be to travel. Even if you are happy with your everday life, I still recommend traveling to see something new. Now I am not saying you need to travel across the world because sometimes this is not economically feasible, or there is just too much going on around you. But how about a weekend getaway for two? Or maybe a few days with the family at a cabin in the woods? There are numerous traveling options out there. I recently read a book in which the author advocated for people to find more time to travel in their lives. The author states that if we could find four different times a year to travel, which could even be a weekend getaway, that this would make all the difference in the world in how we approach our everyday lives.
My life does not consist of this everyday monotony, since I really only have to work eight or nine months out of the year. So I know I am fortunate enough to have more time than most people to see knew places, things, etc. But please just give it a chance, especially those of you who are homebodies. There is a great big world amongst us, with so many new experiences to be made. For those of you who keep saying I want to travel, but this or that keeps getting in the way, stop making the excuses and go do it. Make a list of places you want to see, and find time for them. Like I said, a couple of days is not going to kill anyone. You do not want to have any regrets in your life, so why not go out and live it to the fullest. Obivously, this doesn´t pertain to everyone because some people are going through difficult times whether it is health, money, job, etc. But for those people who can afford it, or have the necessary time frame to travel, I urge you to start making plans today.
Sometimes a new experience can lead to something we never thought was possible. My job has given me that opportunity. Playing basketball in Europe has completely changed my mindset towards other parts of the world. I have gained a new perspective and respect for the European way of life. All it took was for me to make that choice to play overseas, and eight years later I am still going strong. The next time someone asks you to go to the lake for a weekend trip, before making an excuse on why you can´t go, maybe think of a reason why you should go. I bet most of us ultimately wished we would travel more, or just get out of that daily grind which we call life. There are many different parts to this life, go see what is out there for yourself. Enjoy your travels!
